Rhymes
of the Mines - Life in the Underground 2nd Edition
This
volume is Dedicated to Mason Coggin, and to the spirit of all
miners whose adventurous souls, and courageous lives gave the
mining community such a marvelous history.
New
poems have been added to the favorites of the first edition. They
record both the history of mining and today's rapidly changing
industry through the voices of the candle-carrying men of the
1800s to men and women of today. Vignettes taken from old mining
stock certificates and mining pictures from throughout the world
are scattered throughout the 144-page book.
A
companion CD features Mason Coggin reciting "The Prospector"
and "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service.
Listen to "My Sweetheart's a Mule in the Mine", "Sully's
Bucket" and "The Other Shift" written by our friend,
Anonymous. These are only a few of the well-known verses.
A
unique book and CD bound to bring back memories to the mining
man and educate the newcomer.
The
Canary
I owe you much my feathered friend.
Your feathers black with coal
You saved my life so many times
From the gases in this hole.
There's darkness in a coal mine,
That is haunted by it's groan
No place on earth so lonely
When you're in there all alone.
Some folks would think I'm crazy,
If sometimes I could be heard
Singing and talking Êout loudly
To my tittle yellow bird.
You have been my friend, my buddy....
Your presence has eased my mind
I'll miss you in there with me
In that dark and lonely mine.
You've watched me set the timbers,
Drill and shoot the many holes
Come back in and load the coal
Try and fill my daily goal.
They say our time is over
You're not needed here no more
This Davie lamp will take your place
I'll miss you, that's for sure.

The Other Shift
I want to tell you, boss,
I've mined for twenty years or more;
In all that time I've never seen
A mess like this before!
Just take a look at that air line.
It's broken plumb in half!
You see, the other shift walks out
And then we stand the gaff!
They didn't cover up the hose;
We can't find all the tools!
No one can get away with this!
I guess they think we're fools!
How anyone in eight short hours
Could get so little done!
They really tore the place apart
And never got a ton!!!
Unless you teach those farmers how
To timber and to drill,
I'll turn my lamp and diggers in
And go on down the hill!!
About the other shift that worked
What's that?? You're sure you're right??
The hell you say!! How could that be??
There was no other shift last night!!!
